December 30 · Issue #1 · View online

I write about programming, leadership, mentoring, and hiring.

How are the things going?
December was busy due to DevTernity conference. I recovered a few days ago and published all conference videos. If you have time for only one video, watch The Economics of Software Design:

DevTernity 2018: J.B. Rainsberger - The Economics of Software Design
I submitted my article “Stop Learning Frameworks” to Hackernews and it received no traction. The day after, someone submitted it again and the article got to Hackernews top. Timing matters. The popularly led to 150,000 blog views, the article has been translated to many languages, I made new friends and sold my Lifehacks to Developers training.
Pro-tip: it’s never too late to start blogging. Make writing your 2019 goal. I recommend amazing book 256 Blog-hacks to get started.
Don’t forget to read my second article about the role of a software developer in a company – You Are Not a Software Developer. Problem-solving, money-making mindset can level up your career significantly.
Meanwhile, I am reading a great book called “The Goal”. It’s a must-read:
The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt
I bought Ethereum and Litecoin for 10K EUR. I don’t buy Bitcoin, because Altcoins offer much higher returns of investment. I believe it’s a good time to buy now. My trading strategy is simple – buy when others are selling (when the price is low); sell when others are buying (when the price is high). I’ve been playing in amateur crypto-trading league since 2016 and have made decent profit. If you have some free funds, give it a try.

If you negotiate salary and the company cannot pay you as much as you want, then negotiate time. Ask for more free time. Time is money.
Happy Holidays! 🎄
